evie...
Eve-let’s call her Evie-was the first true bad girl of the bible. She was created for her main man, Adam. She was beautiful; the talk of the garden. Evie’s sole purpose was to be a help-meet to her husband. Things were going along fine until BAM! She meets another man. Satan, enter stage left...He was disguised as a snake, or a sephant if you may. Since he was in the garden, he was probably a good looking snake. He talked; which leaves us to believe man could communicate with animals. Now, this snake was not you run of the mill, how-do-you-do garden snake. He had an agenda: “Did God really say that you must not eat from any tree in the garden?”
Now, I guess my first question to Evie is; Where is your husband, child? The bible really does say he was right there with her. Genesis 3:6 tells us:
6 “ When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it”
What??? We have to believe that they had no reason to distrust the snake, nor did they have any fear of the snake. So, Evie’s husband had no reason to have issue with her talking to the snake.
Now, both Adam and Evie had been warned by God not to eat the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. So, who sinned? They both did. Many people try to blame either Adam or Evie, and while there are valid reasons why to blame either or; they both disobeyed God. Their punishments reflect their purposes: Adam had to do hard work and Evie would have pains during birth. (Yes, I know, many women do both.) Even though they sinned and got kicked out of the Garden of Eden, God still blessed them In fact, it was through that sin that we got the promise of a redeemer. Chapter 3 verse 15 says
“And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring[i] and hers; he will crush[j] your head, and you will strike his heel.”
Not only does this explain why most people are afraid of snakes, it gives us hope that we aren’t doomed forever. Jesus, the savior of the world, will be born in the line of Evie. Evie, the mother of all things living.
Not too swanky for a bad girl, huh?
